We often get bookings from people keen to take advantage of their winter holiday, get fit and experience a life less ordinary. Their questions will often be, where is the best training options during winter? What’s it going to be like? How is the heating?

In this article I focus on a few kung fu schools where training is less likely to be affected by the cold. Therefore you can get the most out of your time and the experience in general. When asked these questions I often have to explain its not training in the cold thats uncomfortable, its having down time in the cold that tends to gets to people more. Heating in generally is non-existent making many of the kung fu schools in Northern China not the most attractive option if you’ve only a few weeks or 1-3 months between December and February.

Here is my list of the best kung fu schools in China during winter that offer intensive training. At these schools you can focus on your training, and for the most part avoid the bitter cold, rain and snow.

1. Our best school for training in 2019/20 was this Shaolin Kung Fu school, the Shaolin Temple Kunming. Authentically located inside a working Shaolin Temple this provides a unique quality training experience rich in culture and learning. Located in Kunming the city of eternal spring, the climate is mild all year round.

2. Rising Dragon Martial Arts School has been a consistent choice for international martial arts adventure travellers. Like the Shaolin Temple Kunming it is located in Yunnan Province. This school however, is located rurally in Yongping. The school is renowned for hard physical training and this will be big element of what you will do.

2.5__MG_1322_3_4_tonemapped_v23. Shaolin Kung fu in Thailand? Why not? The Nam Yang Shaolin Kung fu Retreat offers the warmth of the weather but also of a Thai welcome, plus of course the hard training you’d expect in the sleepy backpackers paradise of Pai in Northern Thailand.

4. Xinglin Traditional Kung fu Academy was brought to our attention at StudyMartialArts.Org by some of our ex-students. They contacted us and repeatedly praised the school, master and the set up. Therefore we had to have it on our site. Located on Anhui Province its off the beaten track isolated, and beautiful. During winter it will still get cold but at 14-16 degrees its manageable.
