If you are sparring or competing in any form of martial arts, it is likely that you will get hit in the face at some point. A study of 18-34 year olds, who were training in MMA (mixed martial arts) found that the highest proportion of injuries – 38.2%, were to the head, neck and face. This is why it is so important to look after your teeth when you are training. Mouth protection can help to stop you from getting cuts to your mouth and gums, as well as reducing any swelling.

Mouth Guards and Face Shields

For light sparring, a mouth guard is a good choice for protecting your teeth. These are fairly inexpensive if you buy them off-the-shelf, however, you should look for mouth guards that are specifically designed for high energy sports, and not for teeth grinding, or other dental issues. If you are competing in martial arts, then using a mouth guard, in combination with a full face shield will give you the protection that you need upon impact. Blitz, RDX and Macho Dyna all sell face shields that are suitable for martial arts. These not only protect the teeth, but will bear the brunt of impact if you get hit in the face or head.

Should you train if you have dental implants?

It is important if you are practising any form of martial arts, to consult your dental specialist about the type of implants they can fit, if you need a tooth replaced. Titanium implants that screw in are very strong, but it is also worth bearing in mind that titanium is stronger than bone, and this can cause problems if you get hit in the face. All-on-4 dental implants can help to restore your smile and offer peace of mind during your training. If you already have implants fitted, look out for the Impact type mouthguards – these are especially designed for boxers, so are perfect for martial arts.

Mouth protection for children

When it comes to mouth guards for children, one size does not fit all. Children’s mouths grow and develop at different rates. There can also be a big difference in when their adult teeth start to come through. An, off-the-shelf mouthguard is not recommended for children, as it is unlikely that it will fit properly – in fact it could cause more damage. The molds that you can buy, which you warm with hot water and then shape in the mouth, can also cause issues as they are easily swallowed upon impact. The best possible choice for children is to get a custom mouthguard made out of a strong, resistant polymer. A skilled dental professional can do this for you, and you can even add your club’s logo if you wish. It may be more expensive than an off-the-shelf mouthguard, but it costs a lot less than replacing or repairing teeth.

Looking after your teeth is essential if you are training in martial arts. You should make sure that you get the right mouth protection, that fits your teeth and gums perfectly.
