I stayed at WDP Hainan for 3 months and got a lot out of my time there. There's a good group of trainers and Ismet in particular is a very good teacher.

THE TRAINING

The training is good but not for everyone (see Ismet's "don't apply" video https://youtu.be/ZRW5SmLJgSo). The teachers all know what they're talking about and give excellent direction, and Ismet is happy to talk to people individually about what they'd like to get out of their time. The schedule when I was there for people focussing on combat was a morning session mainly of boxing drills - skipping, footwork, shadow boxing, pad work. The afternoon was usually bare knuckle drills - starting with flying arms, hitting the pillars, and then working with partners to practice combinations. The evening we had a shorter session of push hands. It worked pretty well for me, but be warned there is a lot of repetition and you're quite likely to get bored. Also if you know what you want to focus on (like boxing/muay thai/BJJ) then you may want to go somewhere that focuses more on these areas.

The other thing to be aware of is the camps - they are fantastic opportunities to learn more about a particular area, but it is worth finding out if there are any on before you go and what they are, as they aren't for everyone. Whilst I still got something out of the red sand palm camp whilst I was there, I did prefer the normal training - the camp was very different to normal training and we stopped doing any combat work (though to the schools credit we did reintroduce a little combat work in the camp after talking about it). So if you are interested in combat but want to also experience more traditional kung fu and have some fairly broad training this is a good place to come. If you are looking for something more focussed on MMA though it maybe isn't the right place for you.

If you're more interested more in the classical training then I would definitely recommend it here - lots of teachers themselves come here to train, and the tuition for this is really good. There is some focus on the philosophy as well which can be interesting.

THE LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS

The school is located a few miles from the nearest town, in a very scenic spot overlooking a lot of jungle. There's a gorgeous river to swim in a 30 minute walk away. It really is a nice place to be. If you want to get out the buses or taxis to some bigger cities (and the beach) are really good, though it does take a while to get to a city. The weather in Jan to Feb was perfect for me - mainly sunny and warm. In March it starts to heat up and by the time I left in April we had some really hot days, so if you aren't a fan of the heat maybe don't go over summer!

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES

The school is very well setup and has everything you could need, even a good juicer and an electric scooter that people can use for a small charge. The training facilities are great, there are a few free weights (though no rack), boxing ring, punch bags, wooden pillars, pull up bar. The bedrooms are basic but do the job, and even have air conditioning which is fantastic in the hot weather. The beds are pretty hard, but you can get a cover to provide a little cushioning which makes it much better. The food is pretty good but it does get repetitive quickly! To be honest you do get used to it, but the occasional trip to the nearby town of Sandao for some street food goes down well :)

Study martial arts made things much easier, as I find most martial arts schools are a bit lacking in information, so making a decision can be really hard. I definitely recommend them :)

Wudang Principles (WDP) is a project founded by Ismet Himmet a life long martial artistist, student, teacher and instructor of Wudang Martial Arts. Wudang Principles is a project based not on styles, particular techniques or tradition. But rather the principles that made Wudang and Wudang martial arts great. The 10 ancestral principles are the foundation of Wudang Pai and of Wudang Principles. This makes Wudang Principles rather unique in its fusion of Traditional Martial Arts, modern systematic teaching methods and mixed martial arts.

It is this graduation system under the leadership of Ismet Himmet and his instructor team and their undoubted martial and teaching talents that makes this school standout. It is undoubtedly one of the reasons why the school has such a good reputation, and is attracting such high level students and instructors. The proof of that is in WDP's very successful competition winning teams and their fully booked training camps and seminars. For further details please click the training tab below.

WDP is part of the Xuan Wu Pai lineage and both graduation systems are derived from this lineage under the authority of GM You Xuan De (14th GM. Headmaster of the Xuan Wu Pai). Head instructor Ismet Himmet became a disciple of GM You Xuan De in 2005 when he gave Ismet his "inner-circle-disciple-name: You Li Han.

Training at the school is very much focused on reaching standards of excellence. As a result the school prefers to accept longer term students initially for 3+ months or returning students for shorter periods. In this way high levels are maintained and long-term dedicated students are able to focus on their training without interuption.

Located in the southern part of Hainan Island the school is steeped in Wudang principles offering a perfect environment to train hard all year round. Nestled in the rainforest, it has no direct neighbours and is about 3km from the next town. Students are thus able to fully concentrate on their training and enjoy the clean mountain air and the beauty of the surrounding nature.

Accommodation and facilities at the school are of a high standard, clean and uncluttered. The school hosts 7 Basic (four-bed) Rooms, 2 De Luxe/High Standard Rooms (single and double), as well as several common rooms, kitchen and eating room, washing facilities, one big roof balcony for Qi Gong or other training.

The walls of the floors of the school are decorated with pictures of different WDP events and famous martial artists of the world. This helps to create an inspiring atmosphere for students. While the big common living room. The music instruments, tea ceremony table and chess board offer all students a way to relax.

Food at the school is provided three times a day and is of a very high standard offering healthy and delicious food with a lot of fresh vegetables and eggs. The nutrition is mainly vegetarian, but in regular intervals chicken or fish are added to the food plan.

Ismet Himmet is the first foreigner to open a "martial arts academy for the systematic training of Internal martial arts principles” in China. His academy in Hainan is one of the very few elite training centers, that combine professional Combat training with classic high-level Internal Martial Arts training, rooted in the old, deep principles of Daoist Internal Martial Arts, which Ismet Himmet as 15th generation lineage holder of Wudang Xuan Wu Pai gives on to the next generation. It is his passion, enthusiasm and heart that is devoted toward keeping these principles alive and evolving.

Ismet Himmet has been devoted to martial arts for over 3 decades. And for the past 13 years he has concentrated purely on Internal Styles. In the year 2000, already trained as a martial arts instructor, Ismet Himmet travelled to the PR China, for intensive training in Internal Martial Arts. In this time he lived and learned in monasteries, castles and academies for 5 years with renowned masters of the internal arts. Every year Ismet Himmet travels overseas to give seminars in Europe and other countries around the world. In these seminars he teaches classic Wudang Xuan Wu Pai as well as Internal Mixed Martial Arts. Internal Mixed Martial Arts take the principles, the way of body movement (Shen Fa) and Internal style based techniques and bring them into a modern fighting environment. IMMA also takes the knowledge from modern fighting sciences, like MMA, Western Boxing, Thai Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Sanda, to develop highly-skilled fighters without limits.

Ismet Himmets biography to date:

1985-1989 - First MA training - Karate
1989-1991 - Training in Tae Kwon Do
1991-1999 - Wing Tsun training
2000-2001 - Training in China: Shaolin Gongfu & Wudang Red Sand Palm with Grandmaster Long Jin Ju (Wudang GM of the old generation)
2001 - Start Intensive Wudang Pai in China as long-term student under GM You Xuan De (Abbot of the JinDing Temple during the 90' and head of the Wudang Xuan Wu sect)
2005 - GM You Xuan De takes Ismet as one of his inner circle Disciples of the 15th Generation his inner-circle-disciple-name is 'You Li Han'.
2006 - Established "Wudang Germany"
2007-2009 - Seven times TaiJi Champion in a row (traditional hand forms and Wudang sword). Students of Ismet Himmet attending national and international push-hands competitions, introducing the unique SnakeCrane system for the first time to the West wich is basically the "lost" Wudang XuanWu specific tuishou; re-evolved by Ismet Himmet and gaining more than 10 gold medals within 3 championships (competing against taiji stylists like Chen, Wu, Sun, Yang and other Wudang styles) the Snake Crane System showed it's effectiveness openly to the known taiji scene.

Claudio Manzari started training martial arts 15 years ago. In 2009 he was chosen as one of five students for Ismet Himmets scholarships for a 3-year-long “Back to the roots”-programme, an intensive spiritual and martial arts education programme, designed to bring back the training of “old times”. 2011 he accompanied Ismet Himmet to China to help build up first Master Tang Li Longs school in Wudang and afterwards Ismet Himmets WDP Academy in China. Alongside his training and work at the WDP China Academy, Claudio Manzari is studying at the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Online Academy, where he did his Blue Belt in 2013. Since 2012 he is teaching WDP Combat and Internal MMA at the Academy.

Can Tobias Ploetz has been studying martial arts since 25 years. He was fascinated by martial arts since his early childhood, where he was among others greatly influenced by Stephen K. Hayes Ninjutsu and Bruce Lees Jeet Kune Do. After many years of Taekwondo and Wing Tsun Training, Can Tobias Ploetz started to train Chinese Wushu under such famous masters as Wu Mei Ling, Zhuo Hao Jun and Li Yan Long. At that time he also traveled for the first time to train in China, where he underwent intensive Ji Ben Gong Training. From 2007 to 2009 he was part of Zhuo Hao Juns Performance and competition team. 2009 Can Tobias Ploetz started an intensive Instructor Education under Ismet Himmet at the Wudang Germany Academy in Berlin and from March 2011 on in China. Since 2013 he is teaching at the WDP China Academy and started WDP in Reunion. Can Tobias Ploetz is currently responsible for WDP-Classic Fundamental Education of the Students at the WDP Headquarters here on Hainan Island.

Catharina Costanzo was since young age fascinated by the world of forms, of movements and the human body. Her desire to express and understand the things she perceived first led her to complete the school for sculpturing arts in Hallstein, Austria. But in 2001 she got into contact with different forms of dance and martial arts, such as New Dance, Aikido and Escrima. This encounter led her to a great, 10 year long journey to different places in Asia on search for ancient knowledge and wisdom. She studied meditation and yoga with different teachers and in different ashrams in India, massage and dance in Thailand and traditional Gongfu in China, where she finally found her home in Wudang Gongfu, which she trains since 2005. Since 2015 she is teaching Fundamentals of WDP Classic at the WDP China Academy.”

Daniel Joerg started his martial arts training 15 years ago. In 2007 he went for several months to Wudangshan to train under Wudang Master Yuan Li Min. In Wudangshan he learned from Master Yuan Li Min about Ismet Himmet as one of the Xuanwu teachers and then, the same year, moved to Berlin to continue his training under Ismet Himmet, living and training full time at the Wudang Deutschland Academy in Berlin. 2008/9 he did a one-year-retreat in Hamburg, devoting himself fully to training, meditation and Qi Gong. 2012 he moved from Berlin to China to train at the WDP Headquarters in China. Since 2013 he is co-trainer for Nei-Gong and Neijia Fundamentals at the Academy.

Training at the school is offered all year round and due to the location and climate in Hainan there are no lulls in the training. The school training schedule runs 6 days per week 7 hours per day and below is a typical training schedule.

06:30 - Get Up
07:30-09:40 - Warm Up & Hun Yuan Fa Li, Standing Qigong, Walking Meditation

The Curriculum

After more than 30 years of martial arts experience and almost 15 years of teaching, Ismet Himmet (You Li Han, 15th Generation Lineage-Holder of Daoist Xuan Wu Sect) finalized the decision for a GRADUATIONAL SYSTEM within the Wudang Daoist Martial Arts Systems he and his senior Students are teaching to educate Instructors STEP BY STEP. This decision was and is necessary for the whole WDP-Organization because of the fact, that Internal Martial Arts has such a depth & diversity. Their view is that it is NOT possible to teach the whole System WITHOUT it being PROFOUND & SYSTEMATIC! As every System has its own way, WDP's graduation system is built on the idea of 8 Trigrams INBETWEEN the 4 Instructor-Levels.

Students can choose “WDP-CLASSIC” (all traditional styles with specific basics, qi gong, tao lu and style specific applications) or “WDP COMBAT” (realistic fighting skills using INTERNAL PRINCIPLES of all styles). So what is meant by WDP-CLASSIC and what means WDP-COMBAT?

The main difference between “WDP-CLASSIC” and “WDP-COMBAT” is, that the education in “WDP-CLASSIC” includes traditional basics, style specific qi gong, tao lu (forms) and style specific applications out of the forms! “WDP-COMBAT” includes authentic Internal Principles, Nei Gong, modern MMA, BJJ, SANDA & MUAI THAI-Repertoire, Internal-MMA; using Taiji, Xingyi, Bagua, Baji, Liangyi & Wuxing Ziran Gong Moves & Principles for an actual fight situation!

The School believe, that one CAN use also traditional Styles in actual self defense situations, but NOT in actual FIGHTING situations where the attacker KNOWS how to fight, no matter as an Amateur, or Professional. So for our opinion it is NOT enough to know “TRADITIONAL STYLE SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS” to face an Amateur or Professional MODERN Fighter. This is the main reason why the two are seperated but interlinked. Students who choose WDP-COMBAT will therefore actually also study ALL Xuan Wu Lineage related Basics and Nei Gong Methods within their Sports Combat Fighting Skill Education!

Below you can see in detail all levels and examination details for “WDP-CLASSIC” & “WDP-COMBAT”
