Overview

Nam Yang Shaolin Kung Fu Retreat is the Nam Yang Associations full time training centre based Tat Moh Mountain, Pai, Thailand. Located in the mist shrouded mountains of Northern Thailand it is a retreat where you can immerse yourself in the practise of kung fu and chi kung as well as health organic eating and lifestyle habits.

The Retreat is in an exceptional location. Both beauitful and ideally located the air rolling of the mountains is clear and filled with revitalizing qi. Diet and traditional Chinese medicines are also a big part of the training at the school.

The Martial Arts at the school focuses on Shaolin's Tiger - Crane (which is mostly hard and external) and Sun Frost White Crane (soft and with more of an internal flavour).  Both these arts draw heavily on chi kung (internal energy cultivation) and at the school students will learn several chi kung systems including Tong Ling (clearing and circulating) chi kung, Vein Tendon chi kung and the famous but seldom seen Shaolin Iron Shirt chi kung.

In addition to the fist forms and open hand combat Shaolin weapons and meditation are also practiced.

So here I am, writing this review after being back home from the Kung Fu Retreat for a week, and I am already planning to go back. What was meant to be 1 week turned into 7 life-changing weeks, and I could have easily stayed for much longer. An incredible place set in the mountains of Pai, I'm hard pressed to think of a more beautiful setting. As a complete novice to any form of Martial Arts (and any form of exercise come to that!), I found the training to be energising, strengthening, and a great stress reliever. The morning sessions were at a more relaxing and spiritual pace, practising the Qi Qong using breathing techniques and gentle movement whilst the sun rises over the mountains, then the beautiful art of the Shuang Yuang with it's 66 moves, you feel energised and ready for the day ahead. The afternoon training was a lot more physical, with lots of cardio, extensive stretching, and once warmed up, working with style, techniques and combat situations. This has really changed my outlook on life, and has made me fitter, stronger and healthier of body and mind. The people I met there became like family and it was sad to say goodbye. The difference I've seen in my fitness and ability over the past 7 weeks here has really inspired me to continue on, and since being back in the UK I've signed up to the Nam Yang Kung Fu school in Epsom and can't wait to continue on with the training. Anyone thinking about coming to Pai and this fantastic retreat, don't hesitate. Book it! You won't be disappointed.

I went to Nam Yung, on a whim, to try my hand at Kung Fu for the first time in my life. Having no experience in the art, I booked in for a week and arrived with no idea what to expect. The retreat surpassed my expectations, from the location to the quality of the training, the accommodation to the food. Everyone at the camp was there for different reasons and had different levels of experience but the training sessions successfully blended a range of abilities to address the needs of everyone. I particularly enjoyed the morning Chi Kung sessions which were an amazing way to wake up and, having moved on from the camp, I am already regularly continuing the practise as I travel. If you are looking for something a bit different and are interested in exploring some new (or familiar) physical skills, I cannot recommend Nam Yang highly enough. Sarah D

Nam Yang Shaolin Kung Fu Retreat is a full-time Shaolin martial arts school in Northern Thailand run by the Nam Yang Pugilistic Association. The school itself has a destictive feel to other Shaolin Schools because it is primarily western run and managed. Much of its uniqueness is its focus on creating a solid foundation for students as well as providing them with kung fu theory and philosophical concepts. Students are expected to train hard and create healthy habits of eating and training. This is facilitated partly because much of the food served at the school is grown organicly and on site.

The Masters teaching at the school are all experienced and highly qualified instructors with National awards for their martial arts skills and knowledge. Before arriving we recommend confirming which master will be in attendance. Many of the masters are in high demand and travel and teach in other locations throughout the year.

Training at the school focus on teaching the following Southern Shaolin Kung Fu Styles and Qigong's: Tiger - Crane, Sun Frost White Crane, and several chi kung systems including Tong Ling (clearing and circulating) chi kung, Vein Tendon chi kung and Shaolin Iron Shirt chi kung.

Students can expect to have their training tailored to their needs, their aims, length of stay and of course abilities. This school understands that students will come with different needs and aspirations. In the first instance, training at the school will focus on giving students health, vitality, fitness, power, speed, co-ordination, concentration and also self defence knowledge.  If you attend the school you can expect to develop greater confidence, self esteem and self belief. Training is enhanced through healthy eating, traditional Chinese herbal remedies and also teas. All of which will significantly boost your health and vitality.

The Location of the the Retreat is ideal. It is beautifully located on the outskirts of the Northern Thai town of Pai. Pai is one of Thailands must see inland tourist destinations three hours from the City of Chiang Mai. The town is relaxed and fun and it offers students of the Retreat a welcome break from training as well as plenty of adventure and tourist activities to partake in.

Master Tan Soh Tin of Singapore has been practising Kung Fu for 60 years and learnt from some of Singapore's most famous teachers, principally Master Ang Lian Huat, founder of Nam Yang Pugilistic Association. He has received many international honours. He is absolutely fluent in English as well as several Chinese dialects.

Master Tan’s knowledge is an encyclopedia of kung fu. More than this, he has the depth of wisdom which is always expected of an old school kung fu master but is seldom found. Master Tan usually stays at the mountain retreat from December to January and during May – June. However, we advise student to email us in advance in order to check and to avoid disappointment.

Shifu Iain Armstrong is two times world kung fu champion and senior student of Master Tan. He is one of the world's foremost practitioners of iron shirt chi kung and has demonstrated in over 20 different countries. Iain has worked in a number of security related jobs, including being a nightclub doorman in London - he has a very good first hand practical knowledge of how to use Shaolin kung fu in conflict. Between them, Iain's students have won six world titles.

Shifu Iain is head of Nam Yang’s UK branch and is famous for his high quality kung fu teaching, his instructional films and magazine articles and for the extremely successful competition and demonstration teams which he coaches.

Shifu Iain has coached the British full contact team, judged the world championships, washed in broken glass, been hit with a tree felling axe in front of 10,000 people in Trafalgar Square, met the queen of England, organised a lion dance for 10 Downing Street and promoted professional fight competitions. He writes a column for ‘Combat’ magazine, sits on the executive committee of the BCCMA (British Council for Chinese Martial Arts) and is the organizer and chief referee for the Britain’s traditional kung fu and lion dance championships.

Shifu Dougal Simmions Senior Student of Master Tan and instructor at Nam Yang Pugilistic Association, Singapore. One of the few westerners to be accepted as a kung fu instructor in a predominantly Chinese community such as that in Singapore. Dougal has an excellent memory for routines and a wealth of experience from his many years in Singapore. Dougal, along with other kung fu teachers, makes periodic visits to the mountain retreat.
