HIGHLIGHTS

Maling Shaolin Kung Fu Academy is a medium sized and family friendly Shaolin Martial Arts School set in an isolated location. This relative isolation allows students to concentrate on their training and own self-development. One of the main benefits of this school are the small class sizes and the highly skilled yet approachable masters.

Facilities: The school has both indoor and outdoor training facilities as well as free wifi internet and washing facilities.

Overview

The Maling Shaolin Kung Fu Academy is located in Xingyi City in Northern Jiangsu Province. Headmaster Bao founded the school in 2009. Master Bao (Shi Xing Jian) is a 32nd generation Shaolin Warrior Monk. He has set up a fantastic place to train and live, where students can learn 7 different styles of Chinese martial arts. The main style is of course Shaolin Kung Fu, nevertheless you can also learn Baji Quan, Tai Chi, Xingyi, Qigong, Sanda (Chinese kickboxing), Wing Chun and Bagua.

The academy is under the authorization of Xinyi Government and Xinyi Education Bureau and is also approved by the Jiangsu Provincial Education Department. This makes visa extensions at the school relatively easy and affordable. Master Bao runs the school together with his wife Lisa Guo.

I found the Maling Academy thanks to SMA David’s guidance. I was supposed to stay here 1 month, but decided to extend it for 3 more months! A few days after arriving, the academy already felt like home. The general atmosphere is amazing, the students are very kind and supportive and the masters are excellent.

The academy offers 2 programs: shaolin and tai chi. I went for the shaolin option. Beside these programs, each morning an elective tai chi class can be attended. Mornings and afternoons start with a 2 km run (4km on Thursday PM), and the week ends with a 10 km run (and the cleaning of the school). Chinese classes are available twice a week. It is good to know that, if one doesn’t want to attend a specific class of the Shaolin program, they can discuss it with the masters and attend the tai chi class instead. Another activity I like a lot, is the meditation moment that some students initiated before the morning tai chi. Most classes are hard and challenging, but they are all great. Beside the tai chi master (Master Ning), there are currently 3 Shaolin masters teaching at the academy (big Master Yan, small Master Yan and Master Li). All of them are extremely talented and love to teach. The 2 translators also stay with us at the academy. Both of them are lovely and extremely helpful during and outside the classes.

The experience here is beyond any expectation. Not only do we push ourselves physically, but I also feel that I am learning so much on a more personal level, for example regarding the relationship between the mind and the body (self-limitations), different perspectives on life, relationships, etc. I’m so grateful I came to this place in particular and am really looking forward these few more months. Some last logistical information: Most people stay in double rooms but there are also single ones available. The food at the academy is delicious (almost 50% of the students are vegetarians, different tasty options available). For breakfasts only porridge, eggs and bread (toasts) are available, so the students buy their own toppings and fruits.

To conclude, I would highly recommend the Maling Academy to anyone willing to study kungfu in a small scale institution (an average of max. 20 students from Aug. to Sept.) with young and dedicated shaolin masters in a very positive and supportive atmosphere! I would also like to highly recommend you to book your stay via David. Not only because without him I would never have considered the Maling Academy, but also and foremost because he is always very responsive and helpful. I also find it reassuring to have a resource person in China who is not from the school. I hope that you all who are considering different places to learn Kungfu will find the place that suits you best! Good luck in the great kungfu adventure!

The experience at the Maling Academy was definitely intense and life changing. The school is located in the countryside and is surrounded by beautiful corn fields. Such a peaceful environment helped me reconnect with myself and review my choices and priorities in life. I met so many people and each one of them taught me valuable lessons about martial arts, resilience and mutual support. I’ve learnt that I can fall and get back up despite the pain and the bruises, and the importance of training body, mind and soul in equal measure. The guys I trained with were great fun and helped me every time I struggled with a new move or form. Peter in particular was such a sweet and patient sparring partner. Master Bao and Master Du are incredibly knowledgeable and understanding, and kindly allowed me to personalize my training based on my goals, which I truly appreciate. Lisa answered every question in a timely and professional manner and Mona was always willing to translate and help with flight and train tickets with a smile. I’m also grateful to Mama Bao, who cooks and does all the farm chores, her neighbors friend and the local farmers for showing me the true meaning of hard work, humility and generosity. I feel fitter, happier and more confident then ever, thank you all for this amazing journey.

I loved my time at Maling Shaolin Kung Fu Academy. The training was rigorous and amazing, the masters are ridiculous feats of human engineering, and everyone was so nice and friendly that from the minute I arrived I felt instantly welcomed. Everything — from eating unlimited pizza in Xinyi on the weekends to feeling the last week’s power stretching on Monday morning to being amazed at the workout you can get from lifting two bricks – went above and beyond my expectations.

I’ve had the great honor of staying almost a full year at the school. I was welcomed and shown both respect and understanding from students and staff as soon as I entered. Every student was new at one point, and the first two weeks are the typical transitioning period to adjust to the training. Academy members know this and actively assist new members to adapt to the environment. The school is somewhat like home with the added benefit of improving your martial arts skills under the guidance of amazing masters. Every movement the masters make in class demonstrates their prowess in martial arts and their years of experience. With the occasional help of the talented translators, the masters effectively communicate movements and concepts to the students. For example, I came to the school with some experience in taekwondo, and I thought I knew how to kick properly. Master Li and Master Du both improved my ability to perform multiple kinds of kicks in ways that I had not even considered prior to attending the academy. In truth, every movement I do now feels more polished than when I arrived. Having a basic understanding of Shaolin Kungfu can help any martial artist improve his/her own style. For those who do not have any experience in martial arts, this school is the perfect place to get introduced to the field. Every student I’ve met has been more than willing to help with any issue or question both in and outside of training. We’re a family here, and we all help each other learn and grow in our shared interest. The masters are very patient. They’re used to dealing with new students and many questions, so you can feel free to ask for clarification. The academy’s intended to help you enhance your skills as long as you’re willing to put in the effort to make it happen. I’ve lost roughly 28 kilograms (61 pounds) of weight during my stay at the school. The constant exercise and shift in diet can be great for improving overall health. For me in particular, that weight loss takes off so much strain from my knees. I dislocated my left knee a few years ago, and to be honest I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to survive here when I first looked at the old website back home. Despite that, I managed to join in the training and do pretty well. I can’t emphasis enough how much everyone at the academy supports each other. You’ll surprise yourself when you see progress relatively soon after arrival. If you have the time, give this school a chance. You won’t regret it.

Maling Shaolin Kung Fu Academy is surrounded by an astonishing view of China’s countryside with remarkable scenery of farm life, lakes, and vegetation; which made everyday surreal in awakening to a new day of sunrises and sunsets, with the tranquility of peace and warmth as I begin my day with mediation and the adept knowledge and wisdom from the masters. This has been an amazing experience for me; I came to Maling Shaolin Kung Fu Academy to learn Qi-gong and to focus upon non-combative Martial Arts, without hesitation, I am leaving with so much more than what I expected. I have learned three different types of Qi-gong lessons; stretching; soft Qi-gong, and hard Qi-gong which radiated much energy flow. I also learned the beginning level of the basic forms, and different forms of Martial Arts. I was taught stretching, conditioning, stamina training, and mandarin, and my body is much more flexible from the daily stretching and I have an outstanding degree of energy; with an enormous development of my character within three weeks of being here at the school. China is a culture much different than from America, and the people are so kind and giving they show much love and a sincere desire to share their knowledge with integrity, discipline and outstanding skills. I feel so grateful to have had this experience it has build character in me that will last a lifetime. The food was excellent, the right combination to allow us to be in good health and to still train very hard.
