Name: Jeff Reid I first came to Wudang in the summer of 2007. I have studied with Master Yuan for over a year now and will also be taking part in the new program beginning in September of 2009. Master Yuan's style of teaching and achievements in both wushu and Daoism are unparalleled. Studying as a student of Master Yuan has provided me with the guidance and direction that I have been looking for in my life.

It is under Master Yuan's tutelage and guidance that I have been able to realize my goals as well as to understand my own practice, and further my study of Dao and wushu. I am deeply honored that he has chosen to share with the world what he has learned. Master Yuan is devoted to his student's learning and well being. He immediately recognizes the problem areas in a student's body and can tailor a unique learning program to help any student's goals. Master Yuan takes an active role in his student's development, not only physically, but also mentally.

The atmosphere of the school is always comfortable. There is always a diverse and quirky group of foreigners and all of the Chinese students are friendly. Their dedication to training and perseverance is inspirational. The student-coaches are amiable, well trained, and well educated in both their martial abilities as well as teaching skills; keeping the class engaged and helping to push each student to fulfill their goals.

My wife and I studied at the Academy for 2 months in 2008. We both have a background in karate, but have never studied tai chi before. We choose to come here because of the emphasis placed on internal martial arts. Master Yuan and his coaches teach tai chi with a deep level of understanding of its applications and its effects on the body of the practitioner. We have also learnt basic gongfu and feel that Master Yuan’s emphasis on flexibility and body control is very beneficial.

By starting each day with chi gong practice and ending each day with meditation, we were able to train to our maximum capacity during the day sessions. We would both happily recommend this academy to people from all walks of life who are willing to train hard, regardless of their martial arts experience. It has been a great pleasure to live and study at Master Yuan’s school. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them via email.

I arrived at Mount Wudang mid-September and straight away was made to feel comfortable by master Yuan as I was asked what I was interested in learning over a cup of green tea. That afternoon I walked up to the temple to watch the students train and to get a feel for the place and after speaking to a few foreign students and seeing the temple for the first time (which is impressive) I was even happier with my choice of school here in China.

Over the next 6 weeks I studied Xing Yi and as a complete beginner, was glad that I had a good master to guide me as it wasn't as simple as I first thought it would be…the way that sifu teaches is very good as he takes into account your personal abilities, attributes and constantly evaluates your progress as he teaches (to push you but not too much).

Master Yuan's English is extremely good (which is rare in China ) and he has a very good sense of humor and this makes learning easier and gives a better school environment to live in general. I've spent three months here in all and after learning at the school I'm disappointed to be leaving so soon as there is so much to learn…I'd recommend this school to anyone who want to study the internal arts.

Master Yuan's school is unique and exceptional. Though everything taught at the school is strictly traditional, Master Yuan approaches students with compassion and understanding. From my first day I found that the training exposed the weaknesses in my body and, while the classes were difficult and exhausting at first, with the help of Master Yuan and the coaches, in the course of five months my health improved, my muscles and tendons loosened and got stronger, and I gained a greater awareness of my body in general.

The atmosphere at the school is focused but not too self-improtant, and what I appreciated most was the respect students and teachers all have for one another. Master Yuan has successfully created a community in which students can come and learn a tremendous amount and also make some wonderful connections with other people. The foreigners who come through are always interesting and the Chinese students are all friendly.

The school is also in a great location, close to both the amenities of the town and beautiful walks through the mountains. I could not have been happier with my stay. As I write this I'm on my way back home, but I already miss training and am impatient to get back to Wudang.
