A fitting location to study, to learn Wudang Kung Fu and Taoist Culture. The Academy set back from the road is hidden from tourists, and is surrounded by tea plantations and native flora and fauna next to the old pathway to the golden peak. An ideal location for studying Taoist philosophy and longevity practices, as well as Taichi, meditation and qigong.

Facilities: The school offers outdoor training facilities and a covered training area for practice when it rains. A number of accommodation options both shared and private are offered all are rustic and traditional in feel. Private and shared accommodation options on site are limited so we recommend you book well in advance. Overview

The Wudang Taoist Wellness Academy is unique from other schools on Wudang Shan in that not only do you get to learn and train on Wudang Mountain itself in a stunning location away from large tourist groups, you'll also get to learn from Master Gu who is fluent in English. This makes learning Taoist Culture and philosophy and wellness practices much more accessible. This offers an amazing way for students both long and short term to enrich their life with health, increase one's peace and happiness, and develop greater knowledge and wisdom of how to live in harmony with nature. Imagine being able to learn about the Dao, and practice Taichi and qigong in an ancient centre of Taoism. What changes might an experience like this bring into your life?

One of the main benefits of this school is Master Gu's ability to explain in detail and guide western students. With Master Gu you don't just follow the movements you also get taken on a journey to the deeper essences of the practices. He can guide you clearly through taoist sitting meditation, moving qigong practices, longevity exercises and of course Taichi quan.

"Wellness is talked about very much today, but what does it actually mean? What are the characteristics of Taoist wellness? People often only focus on the well-being of their bodies, but Taoist medicine offers a holistic approach of cultivating not only physical, but also mental and spiritual well-being. Taoism teaches us to become aware of Qi (pronounced chee), the universal life energy that flows through and sustains all things. By becoming aware of the Qi within us, we can cultivate our Qi, learn how to let it flow unobstructed, and learn how to balance our own life force with the life force of other living beings and of Nature itself. Taoist wellness teaches us that true health and well-being comes from balance and harmony--with oneself, with others, and with our environment." - Master Gu

How to get there

Wudang Shan (Mountain) is a UNESCO World heritage site, and is protected by the Chinese government as a special scenic area. The school is only accessible through the main Wudang mountain gate. Cars are restricted on the mountain so to get around you must use the tourist bus, which can be stopped at the school. The best way to reach the school is to get either a train to Wudang Shan or fly into Wudangshan (WDS) airport, and then take a taxi to the mountain gate, where you will be met by Master Gu. Together he will help you get a ticket for entry onto Wudang Shan (240 RMB) and into the mountains.

When you book through StudyMartialArts.Org we will help you with preparations in advance of your trip as well as assistance in China we can even connect you to a trusted local driver that can take you where you need to go. Please note that access to the mountain ends at 5:30pm therefore if you plan to arrive you must have already bought your ticket and be waiting on the bus by 5pm.

Wudang Mountain

The school is located on Wudang Mountain in the heart of China. Wudang Mountain has been designated as a World Heritage Center by UNESCO. For thousands of years, it has been a special place for pilgrimage, study, worship and martial arts. Wudang holds many secrets these include hidden temples, palaces, martial arts masters with legendary skill and of course Taoist philosophy.

Taoism

The ancient ways of the Dao is unique to China. Taoism emphasises the importance of living in harmony with nature. Taoism is based on the teachings of Lao Tzu contained in the Tao Te Ching. As the story goes, Lao Tzu was a wise man who lived in the city of Chengzhou (known today as Luoyang). Lao Tzu began to grow tired of the moral decay in Chengzhou, and predicted the kingdom's decline. He decided to venture west to live as a hermit in the unsettled frontier at the age of 80. At the western gate of the city, he was recognised by one of the guards, who, seeing that this wise old man was leaving for good, asked the master to record his wisdom for the good of the country before he would be permitted to pass. The text Lao Tzu wrote was said to be the Tao Te Ching, the text that forms the foundation of Taoist Philosophy. Taoism emphasises the philosophy of wu wei (translated as non-action, effortless action, or spontaneous action), naturalness, or living in harmony with nature, simplicity, patience, and compassion.

Wellness

One of the greatest legacies of Taoism is the art of wellness, and how to preserve your health and vitality through longevity practices.

 The School

Master Gu's school is small and uniquely located next to the old pathway up to Wudang Shan's famous Golden Peak. Students who practice here will be inspired by its location and the beauty of the surrounding environment. Students should be aware however, that studying on Wudang Shan has both pros and cons. Access to local shops and supermarkets for basic supplies as well as places to go in the evening can be problematic. Your choice will be limited to tourist shops. A benefit of this is that you are total immersed in the environment, tourist culture and indeed your own practice and training.

Master Gu's school is small therefore so are class sizes. As a result, students who attend this school will benefit from excellent hands on instruction in English from Master Gu personally. We therefore also recommend that you book your place at the school early to avoid disappointment.
 About Master Gu

Master Gu Shining is the director of Wudang Taoist Culture Centre, and headmaster of the Wudang Taoist Wellness Academy. Among the martial artists in Wudangshan area, he is one of the few who was born here, and perhaps the only one who can teach in perfect English. While most institutions focus primarily on movement teaching, Master Gu has been directing his academy to follow The Taoist Way: not only movement but also cultural exploration; not only Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and meditation, but also Acupuncture, Tuina, culinary art, calligraphy, Guqin and Mandarin.

Gu Shining's Chinese name is Gu Shiyi. Shining is his Taoist name as he is the 15th generation of Wudang Sanfeng Pai or sect, his Shifu (Fatherly Teacher) being Grandmaster Zhong Qingwei (Taoist name) or Zhong Yunlong.

Master Gu aims to spread the wisdom and wellness practices of Taoism, and to help all who wish to learn and explore deeper into the Taoist culture. He teaches primarily at the WTWA in the Wudang Mountains, but also teaches abroad when invited.
