HIGHLIGHTS

The Mugen Juku Dojo teaches Aikido using traditional Yoshinkan training. This type of training stresses strong posture, repetition of movements, and techniques designed to develop balance, understand the centre line, and combine power with the breath. All this training is then combined with timing, speed, and the right attitude to achieve powerful effective techniques that don't require strength.

Students who attend this dojo will develop a strong spirit, and vital energy connection. To benefit fully from the training and practice at this dojo your Aikido must be practiced with an open mind in a spirit of compassion and respect for each other.

At Aikido Mugenjuku you not only have the normal classes, and private lessons you also have a choice of two special programmes. These special programmes are the Dojo's Stay Programme offering more intensive training and accommodation for overseas students, as well as their Kenshusei Programme designed to bring students from beginner techniques to advanced techniques over 11 months.

Overview

Aikido Mugenjuku Dojo Stay Program offers overseas visitors the chance to train at Mugenjuku Dojo, and receive world class Aikido instruction both from Jacques Payet Shihan, and from an international team of instructors in a friendly and supportive environment.

Overseas students that participate in this programme have the opportunity to stay in the dojo's accommodation. This accommodation is clean, spacious and conveniently located ten minutes walk from the dojo in the heart of Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Kyoto is a beautiful city, rich in cultural heritage, making it the perfect compliment to your training to create a truly memorable visit.

The Mugenjuku Kenshusei Course starts in April each year and is designed to take students, regardless of experience, from basic movements to advanced techniques and jiyu-wza (freestyle). For students with no previous Aikido experience, it will be possible to reach black belt level. For those with previous experience, it will be possible to increase in rank.

In order to be accepted and kept on the course all participants of the Mugenjuku Kenshusei course students must behave in a proper manner and be respectful to both their teachers and fellow students.

Students can join the Dojo all year round except in mid-August when there is a one week break, and from Christmas into the New Year when there is a two week break. Visa requirements for overseas students will vary, depending on your length of stay, age and nationality.

Overseas Stay Programme, and Kenshusei Course

Students who wish to take part in the Dojo's intensive Stay Programme should apply for a tourist visa for 90 days. This is the easiest visa to acquire. Those, however who wish to take part in the Kenshusei will have to go through a more detailed application process in order to receive a longer term visa to cover this 11 month course. If you wish to apply for this course one of our StudyMartialArts.Org representatives will happily help you through the application process.

Intensive Aikido Training

The aim of the intensive aikido training courses will be to give participants an understanding of Aikido and Budo in the right environment where it can flourish. Students will be pushed physically and mentally in a safe environment where the basic can be learned and enjoyed.

Mugenjuku Kenshusei Guidelines

Prospective students will be interviewed during the application process. The application deadlines for the April Mugenjuku Kenshusei Course is March 31st. Along with that application students will be expected to prepare a recommendation letter and a letter explaining why they wish to particpate in the Mugenjuku Kenshusei Aikido Instructor Course. All national laws and dojo rules must be followed, and instructors and fellow students must be respected. Although no previous Aikido experience is necessary it is recommended. The first two months of the course will serve as a probationary period for all Kenshusei. Mugenjuku reserves the right to expel any student during the two month probationary period.

Typical Day

Typical Day: The students will arrive at the dojo one hour before class time to clean the dojo and prepare themselves to begin training exactly at the class start time. The training will run for 4 hours separated into two 1.5 hour classes and one 1 hour class, with breaks in between, and end in the early afternoon so the students may work at a job that starts in the afternoon. Training will be held 5 days a week.

Overseas Stay Programme

The overseas stay programme has similar requirements as the Mugenjuku Kenshusei Guidelines however, the probationary period is only one month and the typical day will be less intensive.

Preparations

Students should be in good physical health. Training intensively 5 days a week for 11 months is not easy. Therefore all who apply for either the overseas stay programme or Kenshusei course must be fully committed. If a student becomes sick or injured during the course, the student will still be required to attend class and watch. If attendance is not possible, a doctor’s note will be required. If a student becomes severely ill or sustains a chronic or other serious injury that does not allow the student to complete the course, they must drop out. Japanese studies language or culture studies will be advantageous both inside and outside the Dojo.

Visas

All students should check with the Japanese Embassy in their home country for specific details about immigrating to Japan and make sure you are clear about everything before coming. before coming.

Mugenjuku Apartment

Rooms in the Mugenjuku apartment are limited. It is therefore important to make your applications early to secure you place. This is the most affordable option for long term students choosing one of the intensive courses.

The training at the school is excellent. Everyone is really passionate about Aikido. I hit it just right and did the first month of the year long course. There have been some injuries (one requiring surgery). I think the mats in the dojo are terrible, but they told me they knew and were getting new ones soon.

The accommodations are very simple. It’s just a small mat on the floor, and a pillow. It’s a shared house with the year long students. The location of the house and Dojo is excellent. It’s all walking distance to each other and also to all the sights as well as a covered street with lots of bars and restaurants.

I had the choice to train as much as I liked with both the year long students and the local Japanese and that was a nice option. For the local classes I felt the dojo was much to small, but again they said they agreed and told me they were actively looking for a new location.

If your not bothered by living in a house with 7 or 8 other guys then it’s no problem. There are long term rentals near the dojo but they are quite expensive.

The best thing is the training. I’ve learned a lot and the sensi really take the time to work with you on perfecting your techniques. All in all I definitely am enjoying it and when they move to a bigger place with better mats then there would be no complaints at all.

Aikido Mugenjuku provides not only regular Aikido class for adults and children, it also provides more intensive training for overseas and local students. Students can join all year round except in mid-August when there is a one week break, and from Christmas into the New Year when there is a two week break.

The Sensei's at this school are very experienced practitioners and teachers of Aikido who have multiple blackbelts. All the instructors are multi-lingual and speak English, and Japanese. The Aikido taught at the Dojo is Yoshinkan Aikido the official martial Art of the Tokyo riot police. This art is part of compulsory training for Tokyo policewomen, making it a particularly efficient system for self-defence.

Accommodation at the Dojo is offered at the Mugenjuku apartment for overseas students. The apartment is clean and spacious and located ten minutes walk from the dojo in the heart of Kyoto.

Getting around Kyoto is extremely convenient. Most people use bicycles to get around the city as it is very logically laid out and all streets run north / south or east /west. For rainy or snowy days, the bus and subway systems are quite extensive and efficient. Mugenjuku instructors will help students find out how to get to each dojo and will help with finding the correct buses / trains, however; it is the student’s responsibility to arrive to each class on time.

Jacques Payetis the founder and head instructor of Aikido Mugenjuku. Holds the rank of Hachi dan (8th degree black belt) and was the longest serving foreign uchi-deshi (live-in student) of Shioda Gozo Sensei. Payet Sensei has been practicing Aikido for over 35 years and taught in multiple countries before founding Kyoto Aikido Mugenjuku in 2008. In addition to teaching the Adult General classes and the Kenshusei course, Payet Sensei continues to travel extensively teaching Aikido in many different countries.

Jacques Payet designed and organised the original international Senshusei Course (専修生 コース senshūsei kōsu), in which foreign students can enroll in the special training course given to the Kidotai (警視庁 機動隊 Keishichō Kidōtai, Tokyo Metropolitan Riot Police). Prior to 1991, the special riot police training was available to Japanese and to uchi-deshi but not to regular foreign students training at the Yoshinkan dojo. Payet observed that most foreign students could achieve technical proficiency up through the 1st or 2nd dan ranks, but did not have an opportunity to advance after that. Sensei Payet conceived of the Course and the IYAF (International Yoshinkan Aikido Federation) as a way of building up qualified foreign instructors who could promote the Yoshinkan style of aikido outside Japan. With the approval of Gozo Shioda, Payet developed a plan for a foreign instructor training course to run concurrently with the special police course. The plan was approved, and Payet organised 12 students for the first course, which was held in 1991-1992

Chris Crampton holds the rank of Yondan (5th degree black belt) and is one of the full-time instructors at Aikido Mugenjuku.
