LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS EVENT

What is Baji Zhandao?

Baji Zhandao is the brain child of Grandmaster Chen Fusheng. It is rich in Chinese Martial Arts theory and reality. The internal development is world class and the fighting skills are among the elite of deadly martial arts. Baji is the foundation of Master Chen’s expression of his martial art. Baji itself has a very famous history in China, known as the bodyguard art. The last Emperor of China’s bodyguards where Baji Masters and Mao Zedong continued that tradition choosing 5 Baji Masters to be his personal bodyguards over all other styles in China. Baji has a rich history for winning battles in the past with in China!and also against invaders to China..

Master Chen Fusheng

Master Chen has had an incredible martial arts journey to any ones standards. His parents passing away at an early age caused him to move into an orphanage. Learning martial arts in secret from 3 elderly masters. In an emotional interview with master Chen last year, he told us those days in China where very hard, he is the only person who is still alive today from this group of people because growing up in the orphanage was so tough. He was told by his teachers that if he wanted to eat he must train hard, so from a young age his motivation for martial arts training came from the need to survive. He said he feels fortunate that he was passionate about martial arts as that made it a little easier to endure the hard training.

Master Si Jun Tao

Master Si Jun Tao's daoist name is Li Jing and his lineage is of the Xuan Wu Sect of Daoism. Master Si Jun Tao has won a number of competitions for his Martial Arts. In the Shenzhen 5th wushu competition he received a gold medal for his fist and sword forms. In the Shenzhen 1st traditonal martial arts boxing competition he received a gold medal for his staff form and in the traditional martial arts competition he won the 65kg Sanda title in 2007. Master Si Jun Tao was born in Henan and has been practicing since his childhood. He begain his studies in Shaolin Boxing and Sanda before he begain studing the internal arts and taoist knowledge from various old Wudang Masters until he was specially trained under Daoist Grandmaster He. Grandmaster He is an internal martial arts master of the nine palace and chunyang sect of daoism. He comes from one of the true old lineages of Wudang Daoism in Taiji Quan, the Five Elements Boxing (Wu Xing Quan, Wu Xing Jian, Wu Xing Gun, Wu Xong Qigong), Internal Alchemy, and other secret exercises special to Wudang Mountain.

Fane Hervey

Fane Hervey began training in Martial Arts when he was 7 years old, but he did not Originally Settle on one Style until he was 18. That Style was Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (aka Ninjutsu). Fane is currently a Rokudan (6th degree black belt) in Ninjutsu. His love for Classical and Evolving Martial Arts led him to Taiji Quan and the Russian Martial Art of Systema. These Disciplines drew Fane to Travel to Japan and Russia to learn from the Source of Ninjutsu and Systema (Soke Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi and Mr. Mikhail Ryabko Respectively). It was this Foundation in Training that allowed him to Absorb Master Chen’s Teachings at an Alarming Rate, when he First Visited China. His Obvious Dedication to Kung Fu Impressed Master Chen to the point that, having Waited 10 years to find the Right Students to Teach his Zhandao System, he Decided to Initiate Fane as his First Disciple.

Fane currently teaches regular Weekly Classes in London, UK and is known for his Relentless day to day training. The Other Benefit of Training with Fane is that he is a Very Highly Qualified & Experienced Exercise Kinesiologist & Physiologist. This means he is able to Optimise your Physical Training in relation to Your Kung Fu.

This year, I wondered whether going to China for only two weeks would be worth it. IT WAS! The amount of knowledge I received from the BJZD camp, including theoretical, trained and that which then integrated into my body, is enormous and exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the training, meeting and working with new Brothers, and re-visiting Master Chen. Fane’s instruction is exceptional. He is an attentive and committed Master. He was generous with sharing information and provided ample guidance on technique. He challenged me beyond my previous capabilities, and in a way that motivated me to succeed. The BJZD system and Fane’s teachings are complete. Each facet of training internal and external facets of the system, for example, Nei Gong, iron-palm conditioning, forms, drills, applications, weapon techniques, etc, are trained each day to facilitate progress and deep learning. I would strongly recommend training with Master Chen and with first disciple Fane.

SMA and, in particular, David’s assistance in making sure that I was looked after is also excellent. He is readily available, able to provide a vast array of information regarding training in a particular context, visa and travel concerns, living and enjoying Beijing, and he is respectful of individual needs and requirements. Again, I would endorse working with David to find the right martial arts training context for your journey.

This was an amazing experience and I gained not only a huge amount of knowledge from Fanes excellent tuition but also a much fitter body as well as a much calmer mind. The other students were awesome and through the constant family atmosphere I am confident in saying that I have gained several new brothers and a new sister. David was excellent all through the trip, willing to help with anything he could help with and happy to meet on the weekends to hang out and get any feedback anyone had to give him as well as enjoying a night on the town. This is definitely an experience that I would repeat and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some intensity and a truly extraordinary life experience.

Because SMA offers a complete experience and are always on hand to help with VISA applications, transport, equipment, and advice on a whole range of things that many schools simply would not think to help with.

2 Week Itinerary

What will happen?

START - 17th June

Meet Sunday 17th June in Beijing. Travel by bus (2 hours) to Master Chen’s for 5 days intensive Training in Baji Zhandao kung fu and Qigong. This is the hardest part of the tour: 5 full days training from 6am to 6/7pm with only breaks for 3 meals and a 1 hour afternoon nap.

Very basic, spartan accommodation, and traditional training in the original style of Kung Fu. Leave Friday evening by bus (22nd June) to go back to Beijing and spend night at hot springs for recovery.

23rd June

Saturday 23rd June we take the overnight train to Wudang Mountain, arriving Sunday 24th June (if you wish to do any sightseeing or shopping on Saturday morning in Beijing you will be able to do it then). The train from Beijing moves south West across to central China, so you will see a variety of Chinese countryside this way: it crosses Hebei, Shanxi and Henan provinces before stopping in Hubei province.

Many provinces in China are larger than most European countries. We spend 5 days Qi gong training, herb hunting and exploring Wudang with Master Si Jun Tao. This will be a very unique and memorable experience. It is also something that very few people will ever have the opportunity to do. The likelihood of us repeating this section of the trip ever again is very small.

29th June

Leave Wudang on Friday evening (29th June), arriving back on Saturday (30th June in the morning. Again, this will be another opportunity to do some sightseeing in Beijing, or shopping before your flight home the following day.

For those who want we can organise some extra kungfu training in the park on that final Saturday afternoon, and it will then be followed by another trip to the hot springs in the evening.

THE END - 1st July

Flight home can be from Sunday 1st July onwards. (I would not recommend booking a flight for Saturday evening just in case there is a problem with the train, plus you do not want to be sat on a train for 19 hours, to then have to get straight on a flight for 16 hours. It’s best to have a break in between and spend a restful 24 hrs in Beijing).

Allowances

A. Flights if bought now are as low as £380 with a short stopover in between. Latest you must arrive in Beijing is Sunday 17th July early morning. Earliest you should fly home is Sunday 1st July.

B. Accommodation for 10 nights (5 in Beijing, 5 in Wudang), plus training, food for 10 days training and access to Wudang mountain is £850 early bird price, £950 regular price, or £900 3 instalment price which I will explain more later.

C. Trains to and from Wudang cost approximately £110 return (dependent on exchange rate). This is for a soft sleeper. It can be done cheaper (almost half price) with a hard sleeper, so if you are on a really tight budget, you can save a little with this option. Soft sleepers are 4 beds to a cabin and slightly larger. Hard sleeper are 6 to a cabin and a little more narrow.

D. Hot springs are approximately £35-40 per 18 hour stay (dependent on currency exchange). This includes unlimited access to hot springs, very large buffet supper and breakfast, and fully reclining armchairs with personal tv screens where you can sleep comfortably (they will bring you a pillow and duvet for the night). If you don’t want to spend the nights in the hot springs you will need to organise your own hostel or hotel at extra cost.

E. Any pocket money for extra food, water, nicknacks, bus and subway (very cheap in China) etc... I’d recommend a minimum of £200, but you could do it on a shoe string budget of £100.

G. If you do not have a Chinese visa already, this is an additional cost of £160 and will last you 2 years if you want to travel to China again at anytime in the future. If you need to get a visa I will advise you on how to go about getting it.

If you stick to the pocket money budget, pay the early bird price and get plane tickets now, the cost for the whole trip (including £200 pocket money) would be around £1620, (not including visas). If you are playing it very tight you can save another £50 on train fares with hard sleeper and only take £100 pocket money, making it £1470 total.

I’ve organised it so you can spread the cost so it is far easier for you to attend.

First you buy your flights now!

Next you pay the early bird price of £850 by 1st April, or If you don’t think you will be able to pay the full price by then, you can do instalments of 3 monthly payments at £900 (£300 each month) on 1st April, 1st May, and 1st June. Otherwise you just pay £950 before 10th June. This is all to account for the possible inflation of the Chinese Yuan.

Lastly you take the remainder of the money with you in Chinese Yuan, so you can pay individually for your train tickets, hot springs, bus rides, and other expenses. This is about £390-400.

Confirm now!

To confirm your space on the trip book your flights and send me your ticket confirmation ASAP.

You will most likely have some questions, so feel free to ask in class. You will be directed where to go when arriving in Beijing to the meeting place. Using the subway in Beijing is very easy and affordable so you won’t have problems getting too and from the airport. But if you have never been to Beijing before it maybe worth trying to liaise with someone who has so they can show you around on arrival. You will be helped with booking train tickets to Wu dang and booking the hot springs. Most meals are provided for you, so there is very little thinking needed other than for training and exploring.

This will be a great trip, both for your own training and for the experience of meeting real Chinese masters and learning culture that most Chinese themselves are not even aware! It will also give almost all of you the chance to advance a grade in your training.

Let me know if you intend to come and book your flights. I will keep everyone a breast of how many spaces are left as and when each one is taken. The price is extremely good for 2 weeks in and around China with training, accommodation and almost all food thrown in. I doubt it will ever be this cheap again.
