I studied at the Yuntai Shan International School for one month.

Training begins at 5:50 am and there are four to five compulsory meetings everyday. Students can only leave the school on Wednesday mornings and Sundays OR if you have a valid reason to (e.g., visa renewal in the city center). I begin with this information because, for potential students, this might be something worth considering. During my time there, we did have some people come in from Shaolin Temple who thought that Yuntai Shan was maybe a bit too strict. In my opinion, however, it was just right. As someone who considers myself a complete beginner, I thought the training was very good. The shifus and the rest of the staff are very welcoming and helpful, and that goes a long way towards creating what I felt was a very supportive culture within the school.

Food and accommodation weren't that great, but they were decent. I was there during the summer break, so I'm not sure if there are more food choices at the canteen when the regular school term is underway. In any case, if what's offered at the canteen isn't satisfactory, you can always try the restaurant right across. Every room has its own bathroom and for non-Chinese students, if I'm not mistaken, you'll at most be two people per room. Rooms do have air conditioning, but they can only be turned on at certain times of the day.

For those who want to sneak in some sightseeing, one of the benefits of the school's location is that it's located very near the Yuntai Geo Park, which is classified AAAAA by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism (that's the highest rating they give). I highly recommend asking for a day or two off training to go see it. You can also ask the shifus to help organize trips to nearby Shaolin Temple or Luoyang.

All in all, if you're looking for value for money, you can't really go wrong with choosing this school. I had a great month there and if I ever go back to China for martial arts training, choosing Yuntai Shan again would be a no-brainer.

I stayed in this kung fu school for one month and my stay here was at first really hard due to the training that i wasn’t used to, but after a while i got used to it and started to really enjoy it. You learn so much physically and mentally here, always pushing yourself through your limits. I also took Chinese classes which were really good because every student has a book adapted for his level and the teacher helps everyone individually.

The hardest parts of the stay were the restrictions (not going out, no smoking, lots of meetings etc) but eventually you get used to it and only focus on the training. The food in the canteen wasn’t the best but there is a restaurant where we have options so it’s Ok. The Yuntai mountain and the Shaolin temple were great excursions and i thank the school for those opportunities. One of the best things here are the people you leave with, everyone supports each other, it really helps.

I enjoyed my stay and training at Yuntai Shan School. The school shop was my favourite haunt, where I got my ice lollies and treats after training. I liked my Shifus and the other students at the school. The stair races after training were awesome ! Our Mandarin teacher was really good, and our Shifu really pushed us hard in our training. The shifus in the school are excellent. The atmosphere at the school was great, I made good friends, enjoyed the post training basketball matches with other students and table tennis matches. The mountain park was awesome! I learned some moves here that I was unable to learn at home, and am trying to keep up the morning training and power training now I am back home. Coming to Yuntai Shan School has changed they way I train, mainly for the better. The only thing is that I am sad that now I am home I cannot train the same way, or have the same friendships with other kung fu people that I had here. I didn't believe when I was here that I would miss the school and routine so much when I came home. I cant wait to return......

It was a lovely experience, I loved that we had to train first then eat later. My shifu was very nice, he helped me get my new Tong Zi Gong moves and stretched me a lot! I loved his mum and dad too, they had a great sense of humour. I hope we can go back again to see our friends and train harder. I loved this school and really, really miss it!

We stayed at Yuntai Shan as a large family group of 6 in September 2014. My initial fears of being in China with young children were quickly allayed by the way the Shifus and staff at the school looked out for and after young people in their care. The training was exactly what we were looking for, traditional, hard core training. 5.40 am wake ups and approximately 7 hours a day training. When we booked our places we were looking for a school that could provide us with what we cannot have here at home. Proper training days, power training and power stretching. Somewhere to stretch the boys and improve their basics and strength.

The accommodation is very basic, as is the diet at the school. Seasonal vegetables, rice and buns/ Bread. Sometimes meat ( which we could not eat as it was not halal) I was relieved to see a halal food window in the cafeteria, the diet although basic was very adequate, and my son who does not put on weight or grow well here at home did both during our stay.

I had no worries regarding injuries or illness as the shifu was excellent in how he looked after the welfare of those in the school. People who were unwell were taken to the Doctor and those with injury allowed to rest. (We had no training related injuries whilst here, which is a measure of how good the teachers are, especially as the power stretching really pushes you to your limits ). The discipline at the school was excellent, just what was needed. smile emoticon as was the scenery to be found 10 mins away from the school at the national park. Truly medicine for the soul. My sons asked me if they were in paradise, the beauty is so outstanding.

We couldn't get enough of the mountains whilst we were there. The other students were incredibly welcoming and patient, especially with my youngest son and daughter who can talk the hind leg of a donkey! Everyone supports new students, they waited for us on mountain runs (I was incredibly slow! running definitely not my thing!) so we didn't get lost, and took us to a small local restaurant where the food is amazing! We still keep in contact with some of our friends.

The only regret I have is that we didn't book to stay for longer. I think all western children should stay in China at a martial arts school for a while....do them the world of good!

The shifus were excellent both in training and pastoral care of their students. My children still argue over whose shifu was the best shifu, and my youngest son cried when he realised we were going home, he was inconsolable for quite a while, which for me was a true measure of the success of the school and atmosphere therein. We are hoping to return for a longer visit in the near future.

We left China with new skills, new friends and a new training schedule, one which the boys still keep up to till today. In short, if you are looking for a school in China that will train you well, push you to your limits, have great pastoral care, still allowing for some mountain park viewing and sight seeing and leave an imprint on your heart. It is this one.

Training equipment is provided for all classes, if necessary. For Sanda (Shaolin kickboxing) pads, gloves and guards are used as are basic weapons for Shaolin form classes. There are training mats used for acrobatics / jumps, take-downs and sparring.

Mastering the basics in Shaolin is key to being able to perform more advanced forms or for having good technique in Sanda. Emphasis is given in training to basics by masters in accordance with traditional training. The practicing of basic kicks, punches and stances increases strength, agility, speed and technique. This progress translates in the traditional Shaolin forms.

Training is intensive so it is recommended for students to prepare before coming to train. Stamina exercise such as running, swimming or doing sports are good ways to increase fitness levels. Flexibility can be an important mediator of progress so doing stretching or yoga will benefit ability level. For improving strength, a form of functional training such as weights, physioball-type exercise or sprinting would be effective. Life at School
